When you think about Scotland, there are sure to be some aspects that instantly jump into your mind. Kilts, bagpipes, perhaps a Haggis or two, all of these things have become quintessentially Scottish over the years. Another much loved aspect of Scottish life, and Scottish culture too has to be the Highland Games!
A traditional show of athleticism and strength, it has become a part of the Scottish culture, as well as an amazing family friendly day out too!
Located in over 80 different places in the Highlands, the games are held between May and September and there are a number of different activities and challenges that the brave (and tough) challengers face during each game. What can I see at the Highland Games?
Whilst many of the activities are based on strength or fitness such as tug-o-war, caber tossing and track and field events. There are also more creative and still as impressive tasks such as Highland dance and even some traditional piping. A thoroughly Scottish affair!
Some of the most popular contents include the hammer throw and weight for height, both of which put the muscles of these brave men to the test. There are also cycling competitions and a hill race, both of which are a huge test for their stamina.
If you head to the Highland Games you will also be lucky enough to see first-hand, a massed band featuring hundreds of pipers and drummers, all playing together and marching as one. This is a sight that once you have seen for yourself, you will never forget!
You will also get the chance to see what it is on offer from the local community, including side shows, livestock events and a variety of parades.
