Whether through personal experience or a friend’s recommendation, you will have heard about the award-winning No.1 Bistro and quality of service at Mackays Hotel.
However, while enjoying your complementary tipple or socialising over a wee dram, it is rather easy to overlook the time and care that was involved in creating the delectable selection of drinks at the Mackays Cocktail Bar.
For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting him, Mackays’ owner, Murray Lamont holds a merit award with the Scotch Whisky Association. Although some might call it a hobby, Murray has capitalised on his learnings to infuse the finest drinks in everyday life to create the most delicious experiences.
The aim is simple. It is to help customers choose a bottle of something that they’ll really enjoy, at a price which offers value for money.
“We’re all about debunking myths” smiles Murray. “There shouldn’t be any rules like ‘white wine with fish, or red with beef’ – people should drink what they enjoy. All of our staff, in the hotel’s bar and No 1 Bistro, are industry trained so that they can help you find something you’ll really like.”
For Murray, whisky is about taste and flavour, and about matching the right dram to the right occasion and with over 50 whiskies stocked at the Mackays bar, there’s something for everybody!
But above all, a drink at Mackays is personal. It’s about people, and memories and friendships.
Good food, good wines and good whisky are about more than fuel and alcohol; they are about good friends – and making good memories. A night at Mackays Hotel in Wick – perhaps with Murray behind the bar – could be the start of making many more.
