Do you love surfing? Thinking about finding a new place to catch some waves? You might not instantly think of Scotland. However, the truth of the matter is that Scotland is a fantastic place to get out on your board and enjoy the open waves.

With so many beautiful coastal regions throughout the country, where is the best place to start? To give you a helping hand we have put together some of the best surfing spots in Scotland.

We are pretty proud that our local area is recognised as being amongst one of the best surfing spots in Europe. This first class status means that Thurso attracts a wide variety of professional surfers. If you are not feeling quite up to their abilities then you can enjoy some prestigious surfing competitions from land.

If you do fancy grabbing your board, then you will be treated to North West swells that make for some pretty amazing surf.

Isle of Lewis

If you are new to surfing then chances are that you are going to want to dip your toe in the water. For those that are finding their sea feet, the Isle of Lewis is ideal. Not only is the beach stunning here, with golden sands, but the waters are seen as being very safe, which means that you can learn to surf and not feel frightened about risky waters.

Isle of Tiree

Not only a haven for surfers, the windswept seas of this particular isle also mean that it is popular for windsurfers too. This is due to the perfect combination of wind and waves, which means that you will find some awesome waves for you to enjoy.

Belhaven Bay

Whilst plenty of surfers may have their own surfboard ready to go and explore the surf, there are some that won’t have access to all the equipment that they need. This means that a beach with a surf school is going to be a great help. The Coast to Coast school is based here, and it is a great place to hire equipment and pick up some of the skills and techniques needed to become a pro at surfing!

As you can see, there are a few different places to enjoy a spot of surfing in Scotland. Seeing as the Autumn is a great time to catch some waves, it might make sense to get in touch with us here at Mackays and see if we have any space. Located near to Thurso, from our amazing hotel you can hit the coasts, and when you are tired out from all that surfing, you can chill out and relax.
