When does it run?
It runs every day between May and September and runs 7 days a week during those months. The crossing takes around 45 minutes and the 2017 prices were as low as £18 for a single fare. During May and September there are ferries departing at 8:45 and 16:30 and during June, July and August there is an additional ferry at 10:30.
They also come back to the mainland, with departures from Orkney at 9:45 and 17:30 in May and September and 9:45, 17:15 and 19:00 during the summer months.
Can you take bikes on board?
The John O Groats ferry is able to carry bikes as well as passengers. Bikes can be transported for free and you do not need to pre-book, just turn up 30 minutes before the sailing time.
Are there any extras you can book?

Not only this, but you can also enjoy one of the afternoon wildlife cruises that the company organises. These 90 minute tours run between the 20th June and the 31st August. You don’t need to prebook on this tour, simply turn up and pay. The tour will take you past some of the most impressive and rugged scenery that make for perfect photo. Not only this, but you are likely to see skuas, puffins, grey seals and a whole host of other local wildlife!
