A Summer Fling in the Highlands

Posted: August 2nd, 2019 | Posted in: Events, General News

Scotland is full of rich history and traditions, highland dancing being one of them. We love it so much we host a festival for it!

The Highland Fling Festival takes place in Lybster next weekend, August 10-11. It’s a chance for the local community and visitors from across the world to be involved in a celebration of Scottish culture and traditions.

It will be hosted by North Lands Creative, a contemporary art studio and gallery in our neighbouring town with a focus on glass as an art form. This makes the festival extra special, with a rare glimpse into the glass community through demonstrations and talks.

It’s a free event and a great way to spend a weekend in the Highlands – expect local crafts, food and performances over the weekend!

But what is a Highland Fling?

Highland dancingThe festival is named after the iconic Highlands dance, the Highland Fling. It is the oldest traditional dance of Scotland and legend has it that it began as a warrior’s dance of triumph and victory. Now it has become a popular dance for competitions and performances like the ones you’ll see at the festival!

Experience this festival and so much more in the North of Scotland, ‘fling’ yourself to Caithness and  book a weekend away with Mackays!
