This time, on our local supplier series, we’re featuring one of our neighbours in Wick. Old Pulteney Distillery is just a stone’s throw from Mackays Hotel, about a 10-minute walk away. Which makes us even more proud to have their famous malt whisky sitting on our bar shelf. Known as the maritime malt, due to its distinct salty finish, Old Pulteney is one of the most northerly Scotch whisky distilleries on the mainland.
What makes them so special?
The love Old Pulteney receives across the world is a credit to how great their whisky is. They have kept the traditional craftsmanship that helped them make their name all the way back in 1826. And with their origins in Wick, they capture the heart of our coastal town perfectly.
The maritime malt
Our favourite, the 12-year-old, has an intense aroma with a hint of salty sea air. A taste of the sweet, spicy and faintly salty whisky will always bring you back to your trip to Wick.
For those who prefer smoky whiskies, the Huddart is the perfect choice. Still recognisable as an Old Pulteney with that hint of saltiness, but with a richer, more complex flavour.
They also offer a range of limited edition bottlings, if you’re looking for something a little bit different.
Not only do Old Pulteney produce a whisky that captures the North of Scotland so perfectly, but they also offer a great whisky-themed day out. Their visitor centre allows you to tour the distillery and find out how their Scotch whisky is crafted. There is also the chance to hand-bottle your very own whisky!
If you ask for a dram at Mackays bar, you’ll understand why Old Pulteney Distillery has stood the test of time! Discover more about them on the Old Pulteney website. And find out more about our other suppliers in our Mackays’ Supplier Series.Book Now
