Highland Games in Caithness
If you are staying with us at Mackays Hotel in Caithness this summer, we highly recommend attending one of our local Highland Games. These are traditional sports events, which include competitions such as the caber toss, haggis hurl and tug o’ war. There’s also bagpipe music, Highland dancing and other traditional Scottish entertainment. Here in Caithness, Highland Games are held at Halkirk in late July and Mey in early August.
Halkirk Highland Games
Saturday 27th July 2024
Just a short drive from here, the Halkirk Highland Games takes place in the small village of Halkirk near Thurso. It is held on the last Saturday in July each year, with nearly 100 events happening across one afternoon. The games attracts competitors from all over Scotland and beyond, as well as thousands of spectators. The programme begins at 10.30 am. At 12 noon a pipe band leads a procession from Bridge Street to the games field for the official opening at 12.15 pm. After the competitions and family entertainment, the day ends with a grand marquee dance and live band at 10 pm.
Mey Highland Games
Saturday 3rd August 2024
The Mey Highland Games is held a little further north in the village of Mey, near John O’ Groats. The Royal Family have connections with Mey through the late Queen Mother, and King Charles has attended the games on several occasions. Usually held on the first Saturday in August, it starts at 10 am with a programme that includes traditional Scottish games, music and dancing. A great day out for all the family.
