Spring breaks in Caithness
Have you ever visited the far north of Scotland in spring? You really should! As we reach April, spring is in full swing here in the Highlands. The flowers are starting to bloom and nature is waking up again. Here at Mackays Hotel in Wick, we love the spring season. It’s a truly beautiful time of year to visit us. Here’s what you have to look forward to on a spring break in and around Caithness:
Seasonal attractions
From around Easter time, the seasonal attractions start to open up in the Highlands. So most of the museums and sites that are closed throughout the winter become available to visit. For example, Dunrobin Castle, Wick Heritage Centre and Caithness Seacoast are all now open for the season! The Castle of Mey is also open on selected days in the spring – please check before visiting. Explore our See and Do Guide for more ideas.
Spring scenes
From around mid-April, the landscape changes from winter to spring scenes here in the far north. Enjoy warmer weather, bluer skies and beautiful spring blooms. Look for daffodils, bluebells, tulips and other colourful flowers. It’s a chance to spend more time outdoors, taking in local beauty spots such as Duncansby Head, Dunnet Head and Dunnet Bay. We even offer packed lunches from the hotel, which you can take on your travels and have a picnic at your leisure.
Abundant wildlife
Spring is a magical time for nature, and Caithness is a wildlife haven. During spring, you could see wild puffins, osprey, golden eagles, deer and otters. There are plenty of local wildlife tours, which will give you the best chance of spotting a variety of species. Of course, there are many farm animals in the fields too, and you might spot some newborn lambs and calves.
