You can’t always guarantee a sunny day in the North of Scotland, but you can guarantee a fun-packed day out whatever the weather! There’s so much to explore in Wick and the surrounding Caithness that it will take more than just a day to experience it, but we’ve picked the perfect day out when the weather’s a bit grey and rainy…
10am – Museum morning
The Highlands is full of rich history and traditional culture. And we want to share that with everyone who visits! For Wick, a lot of the history is interwoven with the large amount of fishing that used to define the area, and Wick Heritage Centre is the perfect place to find out more.
12pm – Retail therapy
Wick High Street has everything you need (and might have forgotten to pack in your suitcase!). We’re also lucky to have lots of independent businesses, meaning you can shop local and take home a little bit of Caithness with you! For more information on our local shops, have a look at the Local Gift Guide we made for Christmas.
1:30pm – Leisurely lunch
Drop off all your buys at Mackays Hotel and pop into our No 1 Bistro for a relaxed lunch. You can look out onto the rainy town from the Shortest Street in the World, Ebenezer Place! Whether you’re in the mood for sandwiches or a hot bowl of comforting soup, there’s something on the menu for you at No 1 Bistro.
3pm – Arty afternoon
Once your stomach is full, it’s time to feast your eyes on some art! Wick Town Hall is home to a collection of beautiful artwork, reflecting Wick’s strong relationship with he sea. Paintings of harbour views and portraits of important figures from Wick’s past can be seen here, and you can also enjoy the beautiful town hall building!
St Fergus gallery is also a great place to see some art in Wick. Right now, there’s a selection of work from the Highland Collection!
5pm – Evening Tipple
A trip to Scotland is not complete without a wee dram of whisky! We’re lucky to have Old Pulteney Distillery right on our doorstep, meaning you get to see where and how its made on a Whisky Tour and then appreciate the taste even more after!
If whisky isn’t your tipple of choice, then Mackays Hotel offers a great cocktail masterclass package. IT’s perfect evening entertainment and you get to drink what you make! Find our more information and how to book your spot on the masterclass.
