Visit Pulteney Distillery
Home of Old Pulteney whisky
Pulteney Distillery is just a stone’s throw from Mackays Hotel, about a 10-minute walk away. Which makes us even more proud to have their famous malt whisky sitting on our bar shelf. Known as the maritime malt, due to its distinct salty finish, Pulteney is one of the most northerly Scotch whisky distilleries on the mainland. From April to September, you can take a tour to discover the story of Old Pulteney whisky, see how it’s produced, enjoy a wee tasting, and visit the gift shop for a bottle to take home.
What makes Old Pulteney special?
The love Old Pulteney receives across the world is a credit to how great their whisky is. They have kept the traditional craftsmanship that helped them make their name all the way back in 1826. And with their origins in Wick, they capture the heart of our coastal town perfectly.
Great meal, great whisky knowledge, great hosts – our guests loved it.. 2 coach loads at the same time, and unexpected, they managed in a short timeframe to get the meals for both lots quickly, and everyone loved their meal
The maritime malt
Our favourite, the 12-year-old, has an intense aroma with a hint of salty sea air. A taste of the sweet, spicy and faintly salty whisky will always bring you back to your trip to Wick. For those who prefer smoky whiskies, the Huddart is the perfect choice. Still recognisable as an Old Pulteney with that hint of saltiness, but with a richer, more complex flavour. They also offer a range of limited edition bottlings, if you’re looking for something a little bit different.
Tour Pulteney Distillery for yourself
Not only do Old Pulteney produce a whisky that captures the North of Scotland so perfectly, but they also offer a great whisky-themed day out. Their visitor centre allows you to tour the distillery and find out how their Scotch whisky is crafted. Choose from a range of tours, from the introductory “The Spirit of Wick” to the more in depth “From the Source” tour. There is also the chance to hand-bottle your very own whisky! The visitor centre is usually open from April to September each year, but please check the website for opening times and ticket prices. Book your tour in advance to avoid disappointment.
