Visit Pulteney Distillery
Home of Old Pulteney whisky
Pulteney Distillery is just a stone’s throw from Mackays Hotel, about a 10-minute walk away. Which makes us even more proud to have their famous malt whisky sitting on our bar shelf. Known as the maritime malt, due to its distinct salty finish, Pulteney is one of the most northerly Scotch whisky distilleries on the mainland. From April to September, you can take a tour to discover the story of Old Pulteney whisky, see how it’s produced, enjoy a wee tasting, and visit the gift shop for a bottle to take home.
We had a much needed break for 4 nights last week at Mackays in Wick The decent sized apartment was perfect for us and our two dogs and it was warm, safe and an excellent base for exploring Caithness. The Hotel is very well organised with regard to Covid restrictions, but this does not spoil the warm and friendly atmosphere and the owners are superb hosts. Breakfast is really tasty and served efficiently and the food in the restaurant is impressive, best polished off with a local dram from the bar
The maritime malt
Our favourite, the 12-year-old, has an intense aroma with a hint of salty sea air. A taste of the sweet, spicy and faintly salty whisky will always bring you back to your trip to Wick. For those who prefer smoky whiskies, the Huddart is the perfect choice. Still recognisable as an Old Pulteney with that hint of saltiness, but with a richer, more complex flavour. They also offer a range of limited edition bottlings, if you’re looking for something a little bit different.
