Visit Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso
The Scottish mainland's most northerly whisky distillery
Just 22 miles from Mackays Hotel, in neighbouring town Thurso, Wolfburn Distillery is a great place to visit during your stay with us. This is the most northerly whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland. The original distillery operated here from around 1821 to 1877. Then in 2013, a new distillery of the same name was launched. The new building is just a short walk from the old site, where you can still see the original foundations.
We had a much needed break for 4 nights last week at Mackays in Wick The decent sized apartment was perfect for us and our two dogs and it was warm, safe and an excellent base for exploring Caithness. The Hotel is very well organised with regard to Covid restrictions, but this does not spoil the warm and friendly atmosphere and the owners are superb hosts. Breakfast is really tasty and served efficiently and the food in the restaurant is impressive, best polished off with a local dram from the bar
Weekday tours
Wolfburn Distillery runs whisky tours on weekdays, where you can see the whisky production process for yourself. Moreover, tours finish with a whisky tasting and you can browse the shop for bottlings and merchandise.
Dramatic location
In the far north of Scotland
Wolfburn Distillery is located on the dramatic Caithness coastline in the far north of Scotland. It takes its name from the original distillery, which operated here during the 19th century. This was named after its water source, the Wolf Burn, a small local stream.
