Visit Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso

The Scottish mainland's most northerly whisky distillery

Just 22 miles from Mackays Hotel, in neighbouring town Thurso, Wolfburn Distillery is a great place to visit during your stay with us. This is the most northerly whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland. The original distillery operated here from around 1821 to 1877. Then in 2013, a new distillery of the same name was launched. The new building is just a short walk from the old site, where you can still see the original foundations.

Wolfburn's whiskies

No records or samples survive of the original Wolfburn whisky. However, the new distillery still likes to do things the old way. The new single malt whisky is produced by hand, using traditional processes. Long fermentation and distillation creates a smooth spirit, matured in hand-selected oak casks. Wolfburn’s signature release is Northland, which is available alongside a range of single malts. Including some small-batch limited editions.

Reviews...

Whenever we are up here, there’s only one hotel that we stay in! Murray, and his team, always make every guest feel so at home. The rooms are cosy, hotel well situated, by the river, and the restaurant and bar are fab. Excellent food and a great selection of drinks. Even with the covid restrictions, our stay was still lovely and we will definitely be back!
